The Basquiat Project: Looking Back, Moving Forward

The Basquiat Project: Looking Back, Moving Forward is an art exhibit featuring artworks created by New York City students inspired by Brooklyn-born artist Jean-Michel Basquiat. Join us for the fourth annual free event at Barclays Center on Sunday, July 28 from 12-5PM inside the arena’s Main Atrium and enjoy 85 artworks on display, representing 40 participating New York City Public Schools.

In 2020, the Basquiat Project brought Brooklyn middle and high school teachers and 1,400 students together for the first time to study the life and work of Brooklyn artist Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988). Known for his street art and addressing contemporary social justice issues, Basquiat provides a rich model from which students created meaningful and socially relevant art. This opportunity was made possible through the Joe and Clara Tsai Foundation’s Social Justice Fund in partnership with the New York City Public Schools and The Fund for Public Schools.
